Revolutionary Tornado Detection

Event 2: February 5, 2008
BTI Provides Extended Lead-time in Deadly Memphis Tornadoes

As the storms tracked northeast from Arkansas, a Baron Shear SCIT began to produce a BTI value of 8 at 5:12pm. Note the altered shear marker color, indicating the storm's tornadic potential.

The first tornado report followed 15 minutes later at 5:27pm, when a tornado was reported on the ground near Highway 61 and Goodman Road.

"The BTI is the single greatest advancement in Baron software since VIPIR. It is easy to understand—every time the BTI hit 7, 8 or 9, we had a confirmed tornado. We were able to give a 10-15 minute warning before the tornado got there. And viewers really stayed with us: one quarter-hour we had a 31 rating. That is phenomenal."
